At a loose end one sunny day in late January, I decided that I would like some fresh air and exercise and decided to do something which I had been threatening for a long time – a climb to the top of the dome of the Duomo – that masterpiece of Brunelleschi which dominates the Florence skyline.
Just a couple of minutes from DeiMori Bed and Breakfast, I was paying my €8 and started to climb. Being January and late afternoon, I was almost alone and as I went up I wondered what it must be like in the heat of summer and crowded with so many tourists fat and thin, fit and unfit.
The climb was steep and the steps many and varied, some parts very narrow where it was impossible to pass and others where the way up widened a little.
Throughout, the construction was evident, with the curved surface of the dome, this mathematical impossibility clearly on view.
About half way, the climb gives way onto the parapet below the frescos of the dome inside the cathedral and one had a clear view of the stained glass and the wonderful colours of the ceiling.
Continuing to climb, the way to the top became steeper and the passageway narrower until the final push came and the last few rungs – almost like a ladder took one out onto the walkway at the top and that splendid view. There was a spectacular vista North South, east and West and as the late afternoon winter sun slowly set, the shadows lengthened and the lights of Florence glowed.
A beautiful point from which to view the famous Florentine landmarks – and to look down on Danny as he waved from the terrace of DeiMori.
The way down was of course easier, but slightly more alarming as you faced the drop, but quickly one was back on street level and looking backwards and upwards at the climb just done.
